I generally shoot at f4, and at f4 the f2.8 is better than the 24-105L wide open. Agree. If you need less DOF, then 24-70mm at f2.8. If you shoot at f4, 24-70mm better resolution, but if slow speed, the 24-105mm IS can make the difference (resolution vs. shaking). I think the 24-70 is more useful for most people and it is not very big as far as these f2.8 lenses go.
