I was in a weird spot where I played DMC3 first, have seen Nero but virtually no information on him for a decade, then jumped straight to DMC5 when it released. Yes, it does get pretty hard. I'm absolutely shit at video games and just keysmash all the time, and I found this game to be really fun and not at all difficult. Story is unfortunately pretty skippable (par for the course in the series), you don't need to have played the others to enjoy this one. That said, 3 and 4 have extremely similar playstyles to this one so if you like it, check those out.
